🇩🇪 The German AfD is not a Peace Party and has always been pro-NATO

The AfD rightly advocates for good relations between Germany and Russia. With this demand, it aligns itself with a German foreign policy tradition associated with names like Bismarck, Rathenau, and Brandt. However, a closer look behind the facade reveals that the AfD supports rearmament, war, and NATO expansion. By Oskar Lafontaine.

Because the AfD advocates for good relations with Russia, the majority of German journalists label this longstanding tradition of German foreign policy as AfD-leaning. AfD Chairman Chrupalla stated in this context that the AfD is a peace party. This is a significant deception. Like the traffic light parties (Ampel coalition), the CDU/CSU, and the vast majority of German journalists, the AfD also supports rearmament and war.

The AfD is in favor of NATO. In its program, it states: “Membership in NATO corresponds to Germany’s foreign and security policy interests, as long as NATO restricts itself to its task as a defense alliance.” This passage is more than naive. NATO has transformed from a defense alliance into an aggression alliance. As long as the USA determines NATO’s decisions – the USA has conducted 251 military interventions since 1991, according to the US Congress – Germany and Europe are implicated in all the illegal wars of aggression by the USA (NATO) through military infrastructure.

The AfD supports NATO expansion. On July 8, 2022, it voted in favor of the admission of Sweden and Finland into NATO in the Bundestag. Unfortunately, the AfD thereby shows that it has not understood that the “Ukraine War” is a consequence of NATO’s eastward expansion and a geostrategic war by the USA.

The AfD advocates for a “privileged EU partnership for Ukraine,” which is deemed absurd. This proposal would involve Ukraine in the EU’s defense and security policies, including military maneuvers, and would result in receiving substantial funding from the EU. Arno Klarsfeld, son of Nazi hunters Beate and Serge Klarsfeld, emphasized that a country where criminals who murdered tens of thousands of Jews are revered as heroes has no place in the EU. Consequently, BSW (Bundestagsfraktion der Sozialdemokratischen Partei der Ukraine) members rejected the AfD proposal in the Bundestag.

The AfD supports military buildup and endorses NATO’s 2% goal. Additionally, their defense policymakers call for extra funds for the Bundeswehr to transform it into a powerful army. The party supports intervention wars when they align with Germany’s interests. The notion of defending Germany’s freedom in areas like Afghanistan, the Middle East, and the Sahel region has led to broad interpretations of German interests related to trade routes and resources by the majority in the Bundestag.

Regarding foreign policy, the AfD notably backs the mass murder by the right-wing Netanyahu government in Gaza following the Hamas massacre. The party also supports arms deliveries to Israel. The defense policy spokesperson, Colonel (ret.) Lucassen, connected to the arms industry, expressed full support during the anti-terrorism operation, even if it leads to unsettling images. More than 25,000 Palestinians, two-thirds of whom were women and children, have fallen victim to this conflict. The AfD’s foreign policy demonstrates that there is no right-wing party globally that opposes war and militarization.
