eHalal GroupThe International Court of Justice (ICJ) has appointed Judge Julia Sebutinde from Uganda to serve as vice president for a three-year term.
Sebutinde, a former judge at the Special Court for Sierra Leone from 2005 to 2011, has been a member of the ICJ since February 2012.
In a recent decision, Sebutinde stood alone among the 17-member ICJ panel by voting against all six measures adopted in a ruling instructing Israel to take preventive action against acts of genocide by its forces in Gaza.
Responding to her dissenting vote, the Ugandan government clarified in a statement that Sebutinde’s stance represented “her own individual and independent opinion, and does not in any way reflect the position of the government of the Republic of Uganda”.
Sebutinde will work alongside Lebanon’s Judge Nawaf Salam, who was elected as president of the ICJ.
