🇨🇳 Growing Regional Tensions as Gaza Conflict Escalates, Tehran Urges Beijing to Intervene
In a recent phone call between Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, concerns were raised over the expanding conflict in Gaza and its potential repercussions for regional stability. Amir-Abdollahian warned that without immediate action to halt Israeli assaults on Palestinian territories, the entire region, now encompassing West Asia, could face a crisis of unprecedented proportions.
Amir-Abdollahian emphasized the urgent need for intervention, stating, “The scope of the war in the region has expanded, and if the attacks on Gaza are not stopped immediately, there is the possibility that the region explodes at any time, with all parties losing control.” He expressed disappointment with the United States’ apparent lack of understanding regarding the severity of the situation and criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to persist with the conflict despite mounting international pressure.
“The security of the region is important for all of us,” Amir-Abdollahian stressed, revealing that Iranian authorities have engaged in discussions with various regional countries on the matter. Frustrated by the US veto of a UN Security Council resolution calling for a Gaza ceasefire, the Iranian Foreign Minister called on China to play an active role in bringing an end to the hostilities, highlighting Beijing’s constructive efforts in fostering peace and stability in the region.
In response, the Chinese diplomat expressed regret over the US veto and reiterated China’s commitment to achieving a ceasefire and providing aid to Gaza. Both officials also discussed the positive trajectory of Tehran–Beijing relations, expressing optimism about the ongoing development of bilateral ties.
In the face of an expanding conflict in Gaza, Beijing is taking a firm stance on the imperative need for a lasting and sustainable ceasefire. Chinese diplomat Wang Yi has been outspoken in advocating for peace and has actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to address the crisis.
China’s commitment to aiding Gaza is evident through the delivery of crucial humanitarian aid via the Rafah crossing. Wang Yi, in a late November meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, reiterated China’s call for a comprehensive ceasefire in the region.
Wang emphasized the necessity of restarting talks on a two-state solution, highlighting the importance of political resolutions in addressing the longstanding issue of the occupation of Palestine. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement quoting Wang Yi’s position, stating, “UN Resolution 2712 is a crucial initial step towards a ceasefire and a positive beginning to resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict through political means.”
Wang Yi outlined three key points during the UN Security Council meeting. First, he emphasized that the war must not be restarted, urging the implementation of a comprehensive ceasefire to prevent a worsening humanitarian catastrophe and the release of detained individuals.
Secondly, he underscored the importance of unobstructed entry for humanitarian aid into Gaza, advocating for additional entry points and the establishment of an effective supervision mechanism.
Thirdly, Wang called for the swift resumption of talks for a two-state solution and proposed the convening of an authoritative international peace conference, led by the United Nations, to formulate a roadmap and timetable for the peace process.
As tensions continue to escalate in the region, China remains actively involved in promoting diplomatic solutions and providing humanitarian support for Gaza. The Chinese government’s commitment to a comprehensive ceasefire and political dialogue reflects its dedication to addressing the complex challenges surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict.
