The Hollywood entertainment industry in America is cracking down on actors and actresses expressing pro-Palestine sentiments and opposing Israel’s aggressive actions in the besieged Gaza Strip.

United Talent Agency (UTA), a global talent agency based in Beverly Hills, California, announced on Tuesday that it had severed ties with Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon after she spoke out at a recent pro-Palestinian rally in New York City. Sarandon, a vocal anti-war advocate since the Vietnam War at the age of 77, had not utilized UTA’s services for several years.

Sarandon, a six-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee, has attended multiple rallies in support of Palestine, drawing criticism for stating, “There are a lot of people afraid of being Jewish at this time and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country.” She encouraged people to question, educate themselves, and stand up against the indoctrination they experienced since childhood. Sarandon further urged attendees to be strong, patient, clear, and to support anyone courageous enough to speak out, expressing gratitude to the Jewish community for their solidarity.

In a move paralleling UTA’s decision, Mexican actress Melissa Barrera faced consequences for her social media posts condemning Israel’s brutality and expressing support for Palestinians in Gaza. Barrera was dropped from the cast of the seventh installment of the Scream franchise. In one Instagram story, she likened Gaza to a concentration camp, denouncing the ongoing genocide and ethnic cleansing.

The production company for Scream 7, Spyglass, asserted its “zero tolerance for [anti-Semitism] or the incitement of hate in any form.” This incident reflects a broader trend of Hollywood entities taking action against individuals who express pro-Palestine views.

Susan Sarandon is not the sole figure facing repercussions for her stance on the Palestinian conflict. In a less publicized move, American cable channel MSNBC quietly removed three prominent Muslim journalists from their anchor roles due to their pro-Palestinian positions. Additionally, the BBC in the UK temporarily took six reporters off the air pending an investigation into their pro-Palestinian social media posts on X, formerly known as Twitter.

These incidents underscore the complex dynamics within Hollywood, where freedom of expression intersects with political sensitivities, particularly concerning the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
