Tehran, Sunday – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi expressed his concerns over the United States‘ veto power within the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), stating that such power hinders the council’s ability to achieve peace. He made these remarks during a meeting with South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor and her delegation in Tehran, Iran.

Raisi criticized the UNSC, highlighting its perceived shortcomings and limitations. He specifically pointed to instances where the United States, by providing military equipment and weapons to Israel, was seen as complicit in the Israeli government’s actions against the people of Gaza. Moreover, he cited the US’s use of its veto power to block resolutions condemning these actions. In light of these circumstances, Raisi contended that it is difficult to expect the UNSC to effectively contribute to global peace efforts.

President Raisi commended South Africa for its stance against Israel’s observer membership in the African Union, recognizing the ongoing challenges faced by the residents of Gaza due to the actions of the Israeli occupation. He applauded South Africa’s support for Palestine and its condemnation of Israeli aggression, expressing his appreciation for the country’s role in Iran’s BRICS membership.

In response, Foreign Minister Pandor emphasized that Iran’s inclusion in BRICS resulted from a collective consensus within the group. She stressed Iran’s potential to make meaningful contributions to BRICS and the joint pursuit of a more just and equitable global order.

Pandor also conveyed South Africa’s interest in strengthening economic cooperation with Iran, highlighting their mutual desire for future collaboration.

The demotion of the Israeli Embassy in Cape Town to a liaison office was a notable development. This change in status was the outcome of a parliamentary vote in which 208 South African lawmakers supported downgrading ties with Israel on March 9, with only 94 lawmakers opposing the move. The initiative, introduced by the National Freedom Party, aimed to protest policies perceived as akin to apartheid and discrimination against Palestinians.

While this action is largely symbolic, it underscores South Africa’s commitment to principles of justice, human rights, and freedom. The National Freedom Party characterized this event as a historic moment and a demonstration of South Africa’s unwavering commitment to these values. They evoked the legacy of Nelson Mandela, who once emphasized that South Africa’s freedom was incomplete without the freedom of Palestinians. The statement further asserted that Israel’s existence was built on the displacement, killing, and injury of Palestinians and that apartheid-like policies were employed to control and manage Palestinians. As South Africans, they refused to remain silent in the face of such practices
