🇲🇾 Malaysia Enforces Prohibition on Docking for Israeli Ships, Anticipates Global Trend
Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a significant policy shift today, imposing an immediate ban on Israeli ships, specifically targeting Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd, an Israeli international cargo shipping corporation. This prohibition extends to vessels en route to Malaysia and those displaying the Israeli flag.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted the government’s decision to restrict Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd from docking at any Malaysian port. This decision marks a departure from the previous Cabinet’s stance, which permitted the Israeli shipping company to dock in Malaysia since 2002.
“In 2005, the Cabinet chose to allow the ship to dock in Malaysia,” Anwar explained, signaling a change in the current administration’s approach, indicating a reversal of past decisions.
The docking ban, effective immediately, encompasses not only Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd but also any vessels flying the Israeli flag. Furthermore, Malaysia is extending its prohibition to ships heading to Israel, preventing them from unloading cargo at Malaysian ports. Prime Minister Anwar emphasized that both restrictions take effect immediately.
The rationale behind this move is Malaysia’s condemnation of Israel’s actions, accusing the country of violating international laws and disregarding humanitarian principles in its continuous mistreatment of Palestinians. The Malaysian government asserts that this response is a principled stand against Israel’s alleged atrocities.
Despite the immediate impact of these measures, Prime Minister Anwar expressed confidence that the docking ban would not adversely affect Malaysian trade. Additionally, Malaysia anticipates that other countries may follow suit, reflecting a potential shift in global attitudes toward Israeli shipping in response to geopolitical concerns.
