🇾🇪 Understanding the Complex Political Landscape in Yemen and the Recent Attacks on occupied Palestine

Recent news about attacks on Israel by forces associated with Yemen has left many people confused, with some mistakenly distinguishing between the “Houthis” and the Yemeni government. In this article, we’ll provide a brief overview of the background history and the political landscape in Yemen, shedding light on the appropriate terminology to understand the situation correctly.

The “Houthis” (Ansarallah):
The “Houthis,” officially known as Ansarallah, is a diverse grassroots movement with a deliberate lack of well-defined political positions. This approach allows them to encompass and represent the entire Yemeni population, irrespective of their Islamic or political beliefs. Within the movement, there are different wings, including right-wing, center-wing, and left-wing factions, each organized into separate unions and interest groups. For example, the left-wing faction is known as the “Cultural Front Against the Aggression.”

Transition from Rebel Group to Political Entity:
Before 2014, the “Houthis” were indeed considered a rebel group as they had engaged in six consecutive wars against the Saudi-backed government of Ali Abdullah Saleh. However, in late 2014, the situation changed with the September 21st Revolution and the signing of the UN-sponsored Peace and National Partnership Agreement. During this transition, more than two-thirds of the Yemeni Armed Forces switched allegiance to support the “Houthis,” providing them access to substantial military resources.

Yemen’s Dual Governments:
Yemen currently has two competing governments: one based in the constitutional capital, Sana’a, and another de facto government based in Aden. The internationally-recognized government operates primarily from the luxurious Ritz Carlton hotel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where they have been in exile since February 2015. Their direct authority is limited and represents only a small fraction of Yemen’s population, approximately 15%. In contrast, the so-called “Houthi rebels” are part of the Government of National Salvation, which exercises direct authority over a significant majority of Yemen’s population, around 85%.

The Forces Behind the Attacks on Israel:
The recent attacks involving drones, ballistic, and cruise missiles towards Israel were carried out by forces aligned with the Government of National Salvation. These forces should not be dismissed as a “rag-tag rebel group.” They operate as a conventional army and are not aligned with one particular party or group; instead, they represent all of Yemen. They fight on behalf of all Yemenis without exception and are the only armed force in Yemen loyal to a government with a parliamentary mandate to exercise authority, a mandate that the Saudi-backed “government” lacks.

In summary, it’s important to understand the complexities of Yemen’s political landscape and the evolving roles of various groups within the country. The recent attacks on Israel were not the actions of a rebel faction but a manifestation of Yemen’s legitimate government, the Government of National Salvation, which represents the majority of Yemen’s population. This nuanced understanding can help dispel confusion surrounding the situation and provide a more accurate perspective on recent events in the region.
