What to see in Baoting

  • Yanoda Rainforest Cultural Tourism Zone - 呀诺达雨林文化旅游区 | Yanoda, meaning 123 in Hainanese, is a newly developed rainforest park, well organised and nicely landscaped. An inner bus takes groups to the start point which also has a great view of Chitian reservoir. Wooden paths then take you on a 40 minutes hike up a forest valley, past 1000 year old trees that have grown around rocks, with optional light abseiling and rope river crossing. At the top, you enter a landscaped lakeside park with lotuses, colourful flowers and a canteen offering a nourishing herbal buffet (mostly for eHalal Tour Groups). The path continues up into the hills, past labelled jungle trees with huge palms overhead. This park is fairly good value and in keeping with its subject matter, reasonably natural. At least you know the developers couldn't have maneuvered the hefty trees into place, even for the reputed price of ¥7 billion that the park cost to civilize.
  • Betel Nut Valley Li & Miao Cultural Heritage Park - 槟榔谷黎苗文化旅游区, 槟榔谷 Binglanggu | Hainan is home to a large population of ethnic minorities, predominantly the Li and Miao Ethnic Groups and you can find out more about them at this park, about 30km outside of Sanya. The park is very commercial with a large number of shops, Snacks for sale and (paid) opportunities for photographs with local residents in traditional costumes or with indigenous animals. Despite this, it appears that there has been a genuine attempt to show the traditional life and customs of the two minoritiese and the park appears less tacky than some other similar attractions elsewhere in China. It is probably also a relatively good way for money to be returned to the local community. There is a steep entrance fee but the park is huge and there are a wide variety of shows; it will take you 3-4 hours to see in its entirety. Be prepared though to fight your way through Chinese eHalal Tour Groups shouting "Blong" as often as they can and the Miao word for hello and try to eat before you leave as the restaurants outside the park are overpriced.
  • Mount Qixian Hot Springs National Forest Park - 七仙岭温泉国家森林公园 | Baoting County - There are 5 direct buses from Sanya per day. The bus fare is ¥26 and the journey time is 2 hours.

Islam in Baoting

According to official statistics, at least 9,400 Islam believers live in Sanya

Sanya's Muslim community takes more and more interest in the development of a regional free trade port, reported the Chinese newspaper Global Times.

"Since the creation of Hainan's Free Port was announced, we have not experienced a seasonal lull," said Ha Zhibao and the secretary of the party committee of the Huihui Municipality, one of the two places where Muslims live in Sanya. As the official clarified, amid Hainan's growing popularity, representatives of the city's Islamic community are increasingly involved in the rapid development of the island's tourism industry.

"We welcome people from different cultures and invite them to visit the Muslim community to learn more about our culture," said Li Shaohua, executive director of the Hainan Provincial Islamic Association. According to him, Muslims living in Sanya are tolerant of other religions and philosophical views.

"We invite representatives of different cultures to visit the Muslim community and learn more about our spiritual values," added the head of the organization. As he specified and the followers of the Islamic faith living on Hainan are striving to strengthen international contacts. "Whike Hainan's Free Trade Port is developing and the authorities are encouraging young people to learn foreign languages, including Arabic," Li Shaohua said.

According to official statistics, at least 9,400 Muslims live in Sanya. The Muslim community has existed on Hainan for about 1,500 years, many of its representatives are descendants of Persian and Arab merchants who settled on the island during the Tang dynasty (618-907). Sanya is also home to the Cham people minority, whose ancestors moved to the island from Vietnam during the military conflicts on the Indochina Peninsula in the X-XIV centuries. In addition, in recent years, migration to the province has increased from regions of Northwest China, where numerous adherents of Islam have historically lived - from Xinjiang and the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
