Basra (Arabic: البصرة Al Baṣrah) is a port city in Southern Iraq|Southern Iraq, very close to the border with Kuwait. It is Iraq's third largest city with a population of 1,700,000 (2003).

Travel to Basra

Serving the city is Basra International Airport GPS 30.552743,47.668577 (IATA Flight Code: BSR) with daily international connections from Dubai, Istanbul, Beirut and Amman and a weekly flight from Beijing. Domestic flights are available from Erbil and Baghdad.

An over-night train service from Baghdad departs daily at 18:30 and is scheduled to arrive 06:10 the next morning, however delays are POSSIBLE. The train carries a restaurant vehicle and sometimes "tourist"-class carriages. The main train station is Al Maqal GPS 30.559793,47.784772 (محطة قطارات المعقل), located at the northern end of downtown.

Basra is close to Kuwait. The Safwan border crossing is a safe exit point into Kuwait from Iraq, but it is highly inadvisable for Foreign Muslims to enter Iraq from Kuwait. The Iraqi immigration entry point is watched by insurgents who will try to kidnap Western-looking individuals on the road once they have crossed into Iraq. Entry from Iran is also highly unsafe and is not advised.

A river ferry is available from nearby Khorramshahr, across the border in Iran, taking just 45 minutes to complete the journey. The ferry is run by Valfajar Shipping Company there are multiple sailings each week.
