[[file:Munich_East_banner.jpg|1280px|Halal Travel to East Munich|caption=New Trade Fair}} The area of East Munich comprises all the mostly residential neighborhoods of Munich which are located to the east of the river Isar, besides the neighborhood closest to the downtown, Munich/Haidhausen|Haidhausen. Clockwise from north to south this neighborhoods are the wealthy Bogenhausen neighborhood, Berg am Laim, Trudering-Riem with the trade exhibition center, and the working-class neighborhoods of Ramersdorf-Perlach, Obergiesing, and Untergiesing-Harlaching. The whole area has only a few places of interest to a traveler, but places like the Munich Zoo and the Flaucher beaches are real hidden treasures. The most important place for any traveller in the area is indubitably the New Trade Fair grounds Messe München in Trudering-Riem.

Travel to Munich/East

By car

All autobahns coming from the east go through and end in the area. The A 94, coming from Passau, doubles as a local street between the Riem trade fair grounds at the eastern city limits and the end of the autobahn in the center of the area. Highway A 8 from Salzburg in the south-east ends in Ramersdorf neighborhood. From within Munich, you best use circular Mittlerer Ring urban expressway. Parking normally isn't a problem.

By suburban train (S-Bahn)

Because of the area's big north-south extend, actually all S-Bahn lines in eastern direction go through the area at some point. All S-Bahn lines run together through the city tunnel to Munich East station in Haidhausen, where they split up into one northern, two eastern, and two southern lines.

  • S-Bahn line S8 runs from Munich East in northern direction along the Bogenhausen neighborhood to Munich International Airport, with stops at Leuchtenbergring, Berg am Laim, Daglfing, Englschalking and Johanneskirchen.
  • S-Bahn lines S2 and S4 run together in eastern direction to Leuchtenbergring and Berg am Laim, where S2 braches off to the north-east to stop at Riem and terminate in Erding, while S4 continues to the east to serve the stations Trudering and Gronsdorf.
  • S-Bahn lines S3 and S7 go from Munich East in southern direction. Their first stops are St.-Martin-Straße and Giesing, where the two lines split. While S3 continues straight south to stop at Fasangarten and terminate in Holzkirchen and the S7 trains branch off to the south-east to stop at Perlach and Neuperlach Süd.

By subway (U-Bahn)

  • Subway line Station munich|u1}}, coming from the downtown at Sendlinger Tor, serves the south-west of the area, with stops at Candidplatz, Wettersteinplatz, St.-Quirin-Platz and Mangfallplatz.
  • Subway line Station munich|u2}} is the main mean of transportation for the center of the area. Coming from Sendlinger Tor in the downtown, it stops at Silberhornstraße, Untersbergstraße, Giesing, Karl-Preis-Platz, Innsbrucker Ring, Josephsburg, Kreillerstraße, Trudering and Moosfeld to terminate at the stations Messestadt-West and Messestadt-Ost, where the trade exhibition center is located.
  • Subway line Station munich|u4}}, coming from the downtown at Odeonsplatz has its terminus and only stop in the area at Arabellapark..
  • Subway line Station munich|u5}}, coming from Odeonsplatz via Munich East, serves the south-east of the area, with stops at Innsbrucker Ring, Michaelibad, Quiddestraße, Neuperlach Zentrum, Therese-Giehse-Allee and Neuperlach Süd.
  • Subway line Station munich|u7}} follows subway line Station munich|u2}} from Sendlinger Tor via Silberhornstraße to Innsbrucker Ring, where it joins the course of subway line U5 to terminate at Neuperlach Zentrum.

By Tram

  • Tram lines 15 and 25, coming from Munich/Haidhausen|Haidhausen, run through the south-western part of the area in the Harlaching neighborhood, to continue to the neighboring city of Grünwald.
  • Tram line 18, coming from Isartor, serve the northern part of the area in the Bogenhausen neighborhood with a lot of stops between Effnerplatz and St. Emmeran along the way.
  • Tram line 17, coming from Munich/Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt|Isarvorstadt runs along Schwanseestraße.
  • Tram line 19, coming from the very downtown at Theatinerstraße, runs along Berg-am-Laim-Straße and Kreillerstraße, in the Berg am Laim and Trudering neighborhoods, with many stops along the way.

How to get around in Munich/East

Given the size of the area and the best way to get around is by public transportation. The south is best explored by Station munich|u1 and Tram 15 and 25. Most suitable for the south-west are Station munich|u5}} and S-Bahn S7. The center and west are served by Station munich|u2}} and S-Bahn S2. Finally and the only real option in the north is Tram 18.

What to see in Munich/East

  • Bavaria Film Studios - The Bavaria Film Studios were founded in Geiselgasteig, just outside Munich's city limits, in 1919 by the film producer Peter Ostermayr. Alfred Hitchcock made his first film, "The Pleasure Garden" in 1925. The studios have been used by numerous famous directors, such as Max Ophüls ("Lola Montez", 1954), Stanley Kubrick ("Paths of Glory", 1957), Billy Wilder ("One, Two, Three", 1961), John Sturges ("The Great Escape", 1963), Robert Wise ("The Sound of Music", 1965), Mel Stuart ("Willy Wonka & the Chocolates Factory", 1971), Bob Fosse ("Cabaret", 1972), Ingmar Bergman ("The Serpent's Egg", 1977), Wolfgang Petersen ("Enemy Mine", 1985), Claude Chabrol and Wim Wenders. Other famous movies shot at the studios are "Das Boot" (1981) and "The Neverending Story" (1984).
  • Effnerplatz - Effnerplatz is a central square in Bogenhausen. The square is surrounded by the modern high-rises Arabella-Hochhaus (75 m/246 ft) and Hypo-Haus (114 m/374 ft). In the center of the circular square stands the 52 m high modernistic sculpture Mae West, through which the tram has to pass on its way north.
  • Mittlere Isar Island - Insel Mittlere Isar - This park on an island between Isar proper and the Isar channel is a real insider tip. It is probably the most relaxed location to have some soft drinks with friends within the city. And since it is located outside Mittlerer Ring urban expressway, outdoor grilling is permitted. The island is close enough to public transportation and far enough from any housing to make a good location for a private party.
  • MVG Museum - The museum focuses on the development of the public transportation network in Munich, with several historic trams and buses on display, in a building that used to be a part of the main tram repair and assembly shop. Another highlight is a U-Bahn (underground train) driving simulator.
  • Riemer Park - The newest addition to the large group of parks in Munich. After the old Munich airport closed in 1992, on the area was built the trade exhibition center with a modern park surrounding it. The landscaped park is one of eastern Munich's main recreational areas.
  • Münchener Tierpark Hellabrunn - Munich Hellabrunn Zoo - Munich Hellabrunn Zoo is a is a 40 hectare (99 acre) zoological garden in Munich being home to 18,992 animals from 758 species in 2016. The zoo was ranked 4th best in Europe in 2013.

  • Michaelibad | Visit Munich's largest outdoor water park in summer or its swimming swimmingpool in winter.
  • Perlacher Forst This large forest of more than 13 square kilometers expanse is used by local residents for jogging, inline skating and biking tours. Due to its large extent and the possibility to get lost, it is recommendable for non-local residents to go there by bike. In the middle of the forest there is a hill called Perlacher Muggl (a former flak bunker), which has a small pavilion on it from where the Alps can be seen when the sky is clear. At a distance of 500 meters south of the Perlacher Muggl, a biotope consisting of five ponds can be found.
  • Riemer See - In summer, go swimming in the Riemer See lake. It has a maximal depth of 18 meters and a very good water quality. The northern shore is connected to the residential neighborhood and designed park-like, while the southern shore is more natural. On the eastern shore there is a wide beach for sunbathing.
