Halal Travel to Northwest Bandung

Northwest Bandung contains some of Bandung's main Shopping Centres, from the Jalan Cihampelas 'jeans street' to the extensive Paris Van Java shopping mall. Northwest Bandung also includes the primary street into the mountains of Lembang and Bandung's airport.

Travel to Northwest Bandung

The primary street to enter the area is the Pasteur toll road, a short branch of the Padaleunyi toll road connecting Bandung to the suburb of Cimahi and to Jakarta. Especially during weekends and holidays and the Pasteur toll gate GPS -6.89052,107.57235 is often severely congested, with waiting times of more than an hour not uncommon. In Northwest Bandung and the Pasteur toll road continues as the Jl. Dr. Djunjunan (generally known as Jalan Pasteur) towards North Bandung. Other key roads into Northwest Bandung include Jl. Pasir Kaliki from Central Bandung and Jl. Setiabudhi from the northern mountains of Lembang.

Take a bus to Northwest Bandung

For getting around in Bandung by public transport, you can take a bus or angkot (public minivan). Angkots follow a fixed route (there are various routes throughout the city), but there is no fixed schedule and there are no fixed stops. To get on, simply raise your hand. To get off, shout "Kiri!" to the driver, so he will pull over on the left (Indonesian: kiri) side of the road. The price of an angkot ride within the city is about Rp4,000 to 5,000. It is best to ask a local which angkot route to take and how to recognise the location you want to get off.

The main bus and angkot stops in Northwest Bandung are Terminal Ciroyom (next to Ciroyom train station) and Terminal Ledeng GPS -6.859053,107.59511 (in the north of the area). From both locations and there are angkot in to various destinations throughout the city. From the Ledeng terminal there are also buses to the major Leuwi Panjang bus terminal in South Bandung and to the suburbs Lembang and Cimahi. Angkot routes also pass through many other streets in Northwest Bandung.

Travel by train to Northwest Bandung

There are two operational train stations along the southern edge of Northwest Bandung, being Cimindi train station GPS -6.89616,107.56119 and Ciroyom train station GPS -6.91402,107.59032. Both stations serve a few daily local trains to and from other stations in the city and to suburbs such as Cimahi. Long-distance trains do not call here. For travelling by public transport within the city, it is easier and faster to use buses and angkot (public minivans).

Husein Sastranegara Airport Terminal

Bandung's international airport, Husein Sastranegara Airport GPS -6.902,107.578 (IATA Flight Code: BDO), is in Northwest Bandung. A few angkot routes pass along the airport terminal, with routes 13 and 14 providing connections to Bandung's main train station. Another option to get from the airport into the city is by taxi. There are no metered taxis available at the airport. You will need to buy an airport taxi ticket at the taxi booth near arrival exit gate. Most hotels provide free airport transfer services.

Colonial architecture

Bio Farma Bandung

  • Bio Farma Bandung - Pasteur Institute building.Villa Isola Gedung Rektorat UPI Jl. Dr. Setiabudi 229 GPS -6.861301,107.594478. Art-deco villa building designed by architect C.P.W. Schoemaker. It was built in 1932 for media tycoon D.W. Berretty. It lies in the northern part of Bandung, overlooking the city to south and the Tangkuban Perahu volcano to the north. Villa Isola and its 2 gardens have a magnificent design by its architect, combining the unique landscape and the Indo-European architectural style. The monumental building was later used as a hotel, named Hotel de Luxe. Now it serves as the rectorate building of the Indonesian University of Education (UPI) and it is neighbored by the university's campus. The building cannot be entered, but the surrounding gardens are public and the building can be seen from all angles.
  • Masjid Besar Cipaganti Jl. Cipaganti No. 85 GPS -6.894671,107.602005. Mosque designed by Dutch architect C.P.W. Schoemaker, built in 1933. It was the only mosque that was built in the European residential area in the northern part of Bandung. The central facade, using a mix of European and (Javanese) style elements, still has the original design, but the mosque has been expanded on both sides.
  • Pasteur Institute - Bio Farma | Built in 1923 to a design by C.P.W. Schoemaker, for the Pasteur Institute of the Dutch East Indies, for research and production of vaccinations. The institute still exists (as a state-owned enterprise), but now under the name Bio Farma. The name of the Pasteur Institute remains as the namesake of the street, as well as the Pasteur toll gate.

Other

  • Museum Barli - Art museum established by and named after Indonesian painter Barli Sasmitawinata (1921-2007). The collection consists of paintings of Barli himself and other Indonesian painters, as well as vintage toys and comic books. Children are invited to follow comic drawing classes.

  • Karang Setra Waterland - Water recreation park with many swimming pools, water slides, etc.
  • ZEN Family Spa & Reflexology - One of the most popular massage/spa services in the city. The location on Jalan Sukajadi (near the PVJ shopping mall) is the original location, but nowadays they have more locations in Bandung and other Indonesian city's. Balinese relaxation massage, foot treatment, back and shoulder massage, face therapy, (Thai) massage, body scrub and more.
  • Punclut - Punclut, an abbreviation of Puncak Ciumbuleuit ("the peak of Ciumbuleuit") is an area in the northern foothills of Bandung. The area is known for its many affordable and traditional (Sundanese) restaurants and for its natural surroundings. From Punclut and there are hiking trails through the mountains towards Lembang.

Shopping malls

Cihampelas Walk Ciwalk - Open-air style shopping mall, buildings designed in a European colonial style, hence its name. Wide alleyways and boulevards filled with middle to upper class apparels with a plethora of food outlets, as well as a Blitz cinema that sometimes airs non-Hollywood blockbusters as well as a number of Indonesian movies.

  • Istana Plaza IP - Typical Indonesian mall with middle-class shops and cafés.
  • BTC Fashion Mall - Shopping mall with a large number of small shops selling affordable clothing. There are also various other shops, restaurants, cafés and a cinema.

Factory outlets

Rumah Mode - Probably the most well-known factory outlet store in Bandung. The options are especially great for both girls and boys' formal wear, but may not be as affordable as the street outlets. If your feet are aching after the stroll and there are cafés with both indoor and outdoor sit-down areas. Rumah Mode gets very crowded on weekends.

Local products, handicrafts and souvenirs

  • Jalan Cihampelas - Sreet known for its many clothing stores and especially for the sale of jeans. A lot of denim shops are decorated with funky designs. Giant models of Superman, Goku, Rambo and others, stand guard over some of the shops. The Cihampelas Walk shopping mall is along the same street.
  • Souvenir Shop 39 - Very good quality and affordable local souvenirs. The shop in one of the many old Dutch colonial style buildings.

Halal Restaurants & Food in Northwest Bandung

D'COST Seafood BTC - Budget no-frill seafood restaurant that has several branches in Bandung, including one in the BTC Fashion Mall.

  • Saung Punclut Teh Ita 3 - Traditional (Sundanese) restaurant with a nice mountain view: sitting on the floor, eating using your hands. Like most of the restaurants in the Punclut area and the restaurant is known for its red Rice.
  • Eastern - Jl. Pasirkaliki Blok B No.121-123 - Popular Halal Chinese restaurant.
  • North Cafe - Jl. Setra Duta Kencana - Balinese & European cuisines, with great scenery, try the balinese fried duck.
  • Saung Kabayan - Jl. Dr. Djunjunan No.107 - (Sundanese) restaurant
  • The following four places are in a green, quiet neighbourhood in the hills north of Universitas Katolik Parahyangan (UNPAR) in Ciumbuleuit, all very "instagrammable" and a friendly walk from each other. From south (city) to north (uphill): Woodfired Pizzas & Gelato Di Dee, Wild Grass, Miss Bee, Kalpa Tree.
  • Woodfired Pizzas & Gelato Cremeria Di Dee - Tiny Pizzas place (limited selection, but wood fired oven) with Gelateria next door, in an open garden setting. Cozy to relax for a while in sunny weather.
  • Wild Grass - Semi-open brick building with garden. Mostly international food with a modern twist, inventive sserts/ desserts, big selection of fruit cocktails.
  • Miss Bee Providore - Popular place with a big selection of good, standard international and asian classics in a spacious, muslim-friendly setting.
  • Kalpa Tree - Fairly new, stylish restaurant, café and lounge with chic food and ambiance.
  • Coca Suki - Jl. Setiabudi No. 45 - A branch of the Coca restaurant from Thailand.

Telecommunications

There are various copy shops and internet cafés in the area, with concentrations to be found around the several large university campuses (such as UnPar university in Jalan Ciumbuleuit and Maranatha University in Jalan Surya Sumantri) . Many cafés and restaurants offer free Wi-Fi access, including the most fastfood joints and coffee houses in the shopping malls. There are also various postal offices and postal agents throughout the area.
