After the Italian chocolate manufacturer Ferrero had to stop production due to salmonella in April 2022, a spokeswoman announced the next case of salmonella on Thursday. The plant in Arlon, Belgium, is again affected.
Italian chocolate maker Ferrero has halted production at its plant in Arlon, Belgium, due to salmonella. “All production has been stopped,” a spokeswoman for the confectionery manufacturer told AFP on Thursday. The bacterium was discovered there at the end of June. Parts of the Kinder chocolate products from the same factory were affected by salmonella contamination last year.
The Ferrero spokeswoman stressed that the factory was “not closed” and that employees’ salaries were “one hundred percent covered.” The cleaning will take about two weeks. The company described the production stop as a purely precautionary measure and emphasized that no end product had tested positive for salmonella.
This is not the first time salmonella has been found in Ferrero products. In April 2022, the company had to recall certain children’s products, including surprise eggs, chocolate bons, and mini eggs, due to suspected salmonella contamination.
Salmonella is a common foodborne infection that can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. It is one of the most common causes of food poisoning worldwide. Individuals with weakened immune systems, babies, small children, and the elderly are more susceptible to severe disease progression.
Arlon, located in the Belgian Ardennes, is an important manufacturing location for Ferrero, which is renowned worldwide for its popular brands Kinder and Nutella, among others.
Ferrero is taking the necessary steps to address the salmonella contamination promptly. The company is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its consumers and will continue to work diligently to resolve the issue at hand.
