In a significant move to promote the growth of the Halal industry in the Philippines, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Davao Region, in partnership with the Philippine Women’s College (PWC) of Davao, has inaugurated the first Research and Innovation Center for Halal Science (RICHeS).
The RICHeS serves as a pivotal hub for pioneering research, cutting-edge innovation programs, and capacity-building activities, all aimed at bolstering the flourishing Halal market. The center is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including a gas range, freezer, refrigerator, proofing cabinet, kitchen hood, stainless steel tables, LED screen display, stainless steel racks, mixer, induction cooker, rice cooker, food processor, pressure cooker, and pasta maker, which will facilitate Halal Research and Development (R&D) activities.
Prof. Vicente Antonio Pijano III, Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer of PWC, emphasized that the center’s establishment showcases the unwavering commitment of both DOST and PWC to drive the Halal ecosystem forward. He expressed his belief that this initiative would shape the future of the Halal industry, setting an exemplary standard for the global community.
Dr. Anthony Sales, DOST-Davao Regional Director, revealed that the idea of establishing this center was born from a collective dream to strengthen R&D and capability-building efforts for Halal stakeholders. He recalled their involvement in the Philippine Halal Export Development and Promotion Act, where they recommended the creation of Halal R&D and training facilities as a crucial component of the program implemented by DOST.
The establishment of the Innovation Center was made possible through the DOST Halal Research Ecosystem for Development and Innovation Program, aimed at supporting the growth of the Philippine Halal tourism industry.
Dr. Sales expressed pride in this contribution to the Science and Technology community and the government’s overall efforts to promote Halal practices in the country. With the collaborative efforts of DOST and PWC, the Halal Research and Innovation Center holds the promise of shaping a prosperous future for the Halal industry in the Philippines, while also contributing to the global Halal movement.
