Indira Gandhi International Airport

From Halal Explorer

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IATA Flight Code: DEL) is the main airport of the Delhi metropolitan area in India. As the airport of the nation's capital and second highest populated city as well as the primary hub of AirIndia, it is the busiest airport in India.

Prayer Facilities at Delhi IG Airport

Indira Gandhi International Airport, serving as the primary gateway to New Delhi, India, is well-equipped to cater to the spiritual needs of its diverse passengers, including Muslim travelers. One of the key amenities available at the airport is a dedicated prayer room located in the transit area. This prayer room provides a serene and private space for Muslim travelers to perform their prayers, offering a moment of peace amidst the bustling environment of the airport.

The prayer room is thoughtfully designed to ensure convenience and comfort. It is equipped with prayer mats and Qibla direction indicators to facilitate proper alignment during prayers. The airport authorities have ensured that this facility is well-maintained and easily accessible to all passengers in transit. The presence of such a prayer room underscores the airport’s commitment to accommodating the religious practices of all its passengers, reflecting its inclusive and multicultural ethos.

For those who prefer to pray at a mosque, the nearest masjid is located approximately 11.5 kilometers from the airport, near the NH8 Highway in the vicinity of Aps Colony. This masjid can be reached within a 35-minute drive, depending on traffic conditions. While the prayer room at the airport provides a convenient option for those with limited time, the nearby masjid offers an alternative for travelers who have a longer layover and wish to experience a local place of worship.

The strategic placement of these facilities ensures that Muslim travelers can maintain their prayer routines without significant disruption to their travel schedules. Whether opting for the airport’s prayer room or making a short journey to the nearby masjid, Muslim passengers at Indira Gandhi International Airport have reliable options to fulfill their spiritual obligations. This provision is part of the airport's broader initiative to enhance the travel experience for all passengers, making it a welcoming and accommodating transit point in the heart of India.

Delhi IG Airport Halal Travel Guide

Once notoriously bad and the airport has been made better with the building of T3 and the renovation of T2. There are several security checkpoints in the airport and you may have to show your boarding pass and passport a dozen times before boarding the plane.

When leaving Delhi from the international terminal, you should show up 3 hours before your flight is scheduled. For domestic flights, 2 hours should be enough, depending on whether or not you must wait in the queues to check luggage. While sometimes time-consuming and the process is smooth, and the new terminal's shops and restaurants are sensibly located at the gate area, not before security. However, if you wish to change Rupees back into foreign currency, you must do this before clearing security.

DelhiMetro AirportExpress 20111214

The Delhi Airport Metro Express or the Orange Line Station delhi|orange is a train line that operates between New Delhi Metro Station and Dwarka Sector 21, with a stop at the Delhi Airport (Terminal 3) metro station GPS 28.5570756,77.08682799999997. A feeder bus from T1 to the Aerocity stop GPS 28.5488327,77.12069599999995 is also available. Trains run every 10 minutes at peak hours; see the website for the exact schedule. The journey to New Delhi Metro Station takes 20 minutes and costs ₹120 from T3 and ₹90 from Aerocity (T1). From the train station, you can transfer to the Metro (crossing the city street to reach the station). Return tickets have been discontinued - now there are only multitrip (10, 30 or 45 trips on the same route with varying discounts) and stored value cards (with a 10% discount on fares).

The New Delhi and Shivaji Stadium stations have city check in facilities for AirIndia passengers on domestic, Gulf, and select international flights.

The Magenta Line Station of the Delhi Metro directly connects to T1. However and the station is across the street from the terminals, taking a while to get to, although the path is now marked and cleared. Since this is a normal metro line and there is no city check-in, it is slower and normal metro baggage limits apply. However, it still has its advantages, as the line is an easier way to get to Noida.

Travel on a Bus from Delhi IG Airport

Delhi Transport Corporation and EATS (Ex Serviceman's Airlink Transport Service) operate buses between the airport and the city 24 hours per day. Travel duration is roughly 50 minutes and the cost is ₹50 per adult, ₹25 per child below 12 years, ₹25 for heavy luggage. Buses run to ISBT (Inter State Bus Terminal) near Kashmiri Gate, Connaught Place, Delhi Train Station and many hotels in the downtown, departing from both airport terminals every 60 minutes from 10:00-23:20. Tickets can be purchased and a fixed seat can be booked at a desk in the Arrivals Hall.

Best way to travel from Delhi IG Airport by a Taxi

Taxis from the airport should only be booked from the yellow prepaid taxi booths operated by the Delhi Police. There is one located directly outside of the airport and one located near the rental vehicle counters to the right of the exit doors. You may be approached by agents offering pre-paid taxis; just ignore them as there have been safety incidents reported. It is worth it to wait in the long queue for a prepaid taxi. A prepaid taxi to the downtown will cost ₹500-600. Ignore any requests by the driver for additional payment. There is no training of tipping taxi drivers anywhere in India. When you reach your destination, take your bags first and then give the driver the receipt and walk away without further discussion. Note that taxis routinely get stuck in traffic during rush-hour, but the journey to the downtown is much quicker at night.

Prearranged pick-ups are also available from most hotels. The cost may be double the charge from the prepaid taxi booths, but you will have someone waiting for you at the airport with your name on a sign and you won't have to wait in the taxi queue.

Halal Restaurants at Delhi IG Airport

While Indira Gandhi International Airport offers a variety of dining options to cater to its diverse passenger base, it appears that there are currently no officially recognized Halal restaurants within the airport premises. This can be a point of concern for Muslim travelers who adhere strictly to Halal dietary laws. However, the airport does provide several Vegetarian restaurants, which can serve as an alternative for those seeking Halal food options.

Vegetarian cuisine in India is rich and varied, offering a wide range of dishes that are both flavorful and satisfying. At Indira Gandhi International Airport, passengers can find numerous Vegetarian eateries that serve traditional Indian Vegetarian dishes, which often do not contain any Meat or animal-derived ingredients, thus aligning with Halal dietary requirements to some extent. Popular Vegetarian options include dosas, paneer dishes, vegetable curries, and a variety of Indian bread like roti and naan. These dishes are prepared using fresh ingredients and aromatic spices, ensuring a delightful culinary experience.

For Muslim travelers, dining at Vegetarian restaurants can provide a sense of assurance regarding the absence of non-Halal ingredients. However, it is always advisable to inquire with the restaurant staff about the specific ingredients and preparation methods to ensure that they meet individual dietary standards. Additionally, travelers can complement their meals with fresh salads, fruits, and beverages that are readily available at various food outlets throughout the airport.

While the absence of officially recognized Halal restaurants at Indira Gandhi International Airport may require some adjustment for Muslim travelers, the availability of numerous Vegetarian options ensures that they can still enjoy a variety of nutritious and delicious meals during their transit. The airport’s diverse culinary offerings reflect its commitment to catering to the needs of its global passenger base, providing a range of dining choices to suit various dietary preferences and requirements.
