The Israeli military has admitted that its forces mistakenly shot and killed three hostages who were being held by Hamas during clashes in a battle-scarred neighborhood of Gaza City. The incident occurred amid intense fighting across the region, leading to a surge in casualties in Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis, and Rafah.

The hostages, identified as Yotam Haim, Alon Shamriz, and Samer El-Talalqa, were believed to be a threat by Israeli troops during the ongoing conflict with Hamas militants. The three individuals were taken from Kfar Aza kibbutz and Nir Am kibbutz during Hamas’s attack on October 7.

The tragic event unfolded in the Shejaiya area of Gaza City, where fierce fighting between Israeli troops and Hamas militants has been ongoing. The exact circumstances surrounding the deaths remain unclear. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a statement on Friday, acknowledging the mistake: “During combat in Shejaiya, the IDF mistakenly identified three Israeli hostages as a threat. As a result, the troops fired toward them and they were killed.”

Rear Adm Daniel Hagari, an army spokesperson, suggested that the hostages might have either fled their captors or been abandoned, emphasizing that the IDF deeply regretted the incident and was conducting an investigation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed condolences, stating, “Together with the entire people of Israel, I bow my head in deep sorrow and mourn the death of three of our dear sons who were kidnapped. My heart goes out to the grieving families in their difficult time.”

In a separate development, Al Jazeera reported that one of its journalists was killed, and another was injured in a drone strike while reporting in Khan Younis. The network initially stated that the injuries were caused by shrapnel during an airstrike on a school. However, in a subsequent statement, Al Jazeera attributed the injuries to a drone strike and accused Israeli forces of preventing emergency treatment for the injured journalist.

Earlier on Friday, the IDF recovered the bodies of three other hostages in Gaza: Elya Toledano, a French-Israeli civilian, and two soldiers, Nik Beizer and Ron Scherman. The circumstances of their deaths and the location of recovery were not detailed in the military’s statement.

The conflict, which began with the breach of the separation barrier by Hamas gunmen on October 7, has resulted in the hostage-taking of about 240 people. Israel’s offensive in Gaza has led to a significant loss of life, with over 18,700 reported casualties, mostly women and children, according to Palestinian officials.

Despite Israel’s declared objective of bringing home all hostages, there has been limited success in rescuing captives. Families of the hostages expressed shock at the Mossad director’s refusal to conduct new negotiations, demanding an explanation from the authorities.

During a truce in late November, Hamas released over 100 hostages in exchange for the release of 240 individuals imprisoned by Israel. However, more than 130 hostages are still held in Gaza, and some have been declared dead in absentia by Israeli authorities.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Association claimed that Israel has detained over 4,400 Palestinians since October 7, holding around half without charge. The situation continues to escalate, with the conflict’s toll extending beyond the immediate battleground.
