The eight-century Muslim rule of Spain ended in 1492, leaving behind a rich Islamic heritage, especially its architectural heritage. Contemporary Muslims began to arrive in Spain in large numbers since the seventies of the last century, and most of them came from the Kingdom of Morocco, which became the largest Muslim community in Spain.

Muslims are concentrated in various regions of the country, especially in the major cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Valencia.
It is estimated that there are 13 large mosques and more than 1000 small mosques and prayer halls spread across the country. The state recognizes Islam and grants Muslim privileges, including teaching Islam in schools and religious holidays.
In recent years, there has been a remarkable rise in some far-right parties, such as the Vox party, which pursues an anti-immigrant and anti- Muslim policy in Spain.
